Two words. Organic Chemistry. Whether you love it or in my case, dread it with your entire being, it’s a necessary class in the pursuit of medical school. If only I had known sooner than later, that I’d end up changing my mind about becoming a physician. Though I wouldn’t change it for the world now, because it’s how I met my gorgeous Lacey Jo, junior year of college.
I remember sleep deprived nights, waking up at 2 am having full on fallen asleep, drool on our notes. Elbowing the other to wake up and work through the reactions, just one more time. During fall semester we discovered our mutual love for the humanities, Klimt, Edgar Degas, e.e. cummings, Elizbeth Brontë, romantic comedies, creative writing,
Fast forward 10 years and I get a call from Lacey, who at the time is a pediatric travel nurse in NYC, and I think something’s terribly wrong. Turns out she’s lovesick. Like butterflies in your stomach, all thoughts consumed by one guy, roller coaster dizzy, can’t eat, can’t sleep – in love. This guy’s different. Brad’s interesting. He’s holding her attention. He’s mysterious, outdoorsy, intellectual, capable, handy, cultured, well traveled, about to graduate medical school, and so, so into her. He’s the one!
Cue the music. No really. Lacey and I always joked that when she got married I would sing this song, by the Weepies at her wedding. Since I can’t sing, here’s Deb Talan.
Your wedding weekend was so rad. By far one of my favorites ever. Floating down the river in canoes, camping in cabins, roasting smores under the stars, and dancing at your reception in the twinkle-lit barn. Memories I’ll keep forever.
My dearest friend, what a privilege it was to be trusted with one of the happiest days of your entire life. He was well worth the wait. As you said in your vows, “I promise to persevere, never giving up on this great love.” I too, promise to be your friend, your community, and encourage you in your marriage, through all the bliss and occasional heart ache, from now until forever.
With aloha,
Crystal Chanel
