Kailua Urban Portrait Photographer: Meet Renee

Meet Renee, my spunky, fierce, redheaded, bohemian/80’s/high fashion model.  I first met Renee at The Black Cat Salon in Kailua.  She’s a hair stylist there. I’m an Aveda fan, believer, fanatic, whatever you want to call it, through and through.  I love their hair color, hair cuts, make up, and skin care.  I love their mission and the way they give back to the community.  I love the black licorice tea, the massages, and the fun, unique, creative people that Aveda tends to attract.  Back to Renee.  I went to The Black Cat for a bang trim and we struck up a conversation.  I basically asked her out, lol.  Told her that she had striking features that would photograph incredibly well and asked her if I could take her picture.  Like Annie Liebowitz said,

“When I say I want to photograph someone, what it really means is that I’d like to know them.  Anyone I know I photograph.”

And that is how it all began.  Lucky, lucky me.  We met at her house, finalized her outfits, and then made our way down towards Chad Lous.  A lovely little coffee shop in Kailua on Kihapai Street.

Renee was effortless in front of the camera.  You would think she was used to being photographed.  She claims otherwise, saying she was nervous and what not.  Instead, I saw a fierce, confident, beautiful woman able to easily take on the persona of whichever outfit she had on.  Not only is striking, she’s also sweet, warm hearted, and talented.  I am so excited for her adventure this Spring.  She’s going back packing around Europe with her best friend.  Anyone and everyone who’s ever participated in this rite of passage, knows how it changes you and how you never forget it.

Which kind of reminds me of the time when Ivan and I wandered around Europe.  It was so fantastic.  Maybe we’ll go back in a year or so.  For now, this mama is going to cruise it up Alaska this summer.

Thanks for the fantastic session, Renee.  Looking forward to collaborating with you in the future.
