Happy Birthday to my crush! Thank you for my true life fairytale and our over the top, truly fantastic Ava Lily. I love you.
For my birthday back in July, my love put some of his hard earned money towards a sweet, brand new, long desired and hoped for, Canon 35mm 1.4 L lens. I convinced him to let me photograph his bearded “handsomeness” in an outdoor portrait photography session. He was a bit reluctant at first, but he couldn’t resist the charm and gorgeous bokeh that the Canon 35 prime is known for. We made our way down the road to the Kawainui Marsh here in Kailua, Hawaii. This place is a lush, green dream. The first time I walked along its path, I couldn’t believe how lucky we were to live so close to this awe-inspiring nature wonderland and perfect diffused light.
Ivan was a biology major in undergrad so he was geeking out about the water lettuce a.k.a. Pistia Stratiotes. According to Wikipedia, it was first found in the Nile near Lake Victoria in Africa. Unfortunately, despite its green beauty, it’s a common aquatic weed which reduces oxygen and blocks light, thereby killing fish and native submerged plants. So there you go, that’s what you get when you mix a photographer and Biology major, an informative blog post about Pistia Stratiotes on a Hawaii wedding photography blog. Makes all the sense in the world, eh?
Though, that is precisely why I love my life and my husband. He keeps it interesting. I’m always learning something new from him, whether it be about the use of the golden proportion in the artist’s world, a new song by Dave Bazan, or Ava’s favorite dance move when listening to the Weepies. He’s a good guy and I’m his lucky wife. So here’s to being 31, babe! Wishing you many, many more.
